How many SKS carbines do I really need?
I have one, plus another I thought I ought to keep as a back-up piece in case something broke on the first one in a crisis (if TS ever HTF, I mean).
But I like 'em a lot. Wouldn't mind owning more of them, but then again it sorta' seems a little ridiculous. I can only shoot them one at a time, after all. So just how many SKS carbines does a guy really need? |

Every one you can get for $200 or less!
Don't foreget to get the Kivaari trigger job and load up on Tapco 20-round mags. |

Re: How many SKS carbines do I really need?
I bought one of the Yugos several years ago with my C&R. I don't really care for it. Long and heavy for the cartridge. A blade bayonet that isn't sharp and that you aren't supposed to sharpen or the finish will flake? A stock made out of some really odd wood. And the most annoying thing to me is the sight line. You get your head all snuggled down so that you can see the sights and the top of the receiver blocks 90% of your view of the rear sight? All this and a fixed magazine of low capacity?
I decided to do the same thing the USSR did and move on to the next design. Three different AK's instead. Three different calibers, three different stock designs. I enjoy shooting them. The SKS is just to round out the collection! Gregg |

Just one more. Lather, rinse repeat.

Re: How many SKS carbines do I really need?
With the price spread between the SKS and the AK's these days, I'd say forget another SKS, get an AK. The days of $100 SKS are long gone, I'm afraid.

Call yourself a collector and get one from every country that made them. There is no shame in collecting guns you like.

Re: How many SKS carbines do I really need?
AK-74 is the most bang for your buck these days. 7.62x39 is overpriced for what it is due to demand. 6.8 SPC being the next best thing if you can handle the gayness of direct impingement/stoner's design for the benefit of accuracy.(which is negligible when the effective range of 5.56 is taken in to account.)
Personally: I think a mosin nagant is still the best bang for you buck as far as loner guns. You don't want some idiot who's never shot a gun before pissing through ammo on a semi-automatic anyway. If you want something a little more tactical to loan out: how about a lever action in 30-30? .30 carbine's are nice little guns as well, but the ammo is ridiculous expensive. Get an M1895 nagant for every loaner gun you have, and a .22 revolver/ruger 10/22 to train them with. If you're good at metal working/have a dremel tool: pps-43 parts kits are the new sks. |
